Heard some crazy theories, here's some ideas I have about what's really going on here.
TL;DR at the bottom, I wrote waaay too much.
Is COVID19 real and deadly? Absolutely. That isn't up for debate, in my opinion. Too many people and places would have to be lying, simultaneously. Have you ever worked on a group project? It doesn't matter if it was in grade school or a professional level, people are dumb as shit and often struggle to agree on anything. The more people you add, the worse it gets. Miscommunication, social power dynamics, people just not complying.
Is a quarantine and social distancing the best way to prevent the spread? Well - yes. For something we have no vaccine or cure for, it's the only thing that would work. We have to get a little medieval with it, since we can't currently use the advancements we have for other viruses, like the flu.
That all being said, this virus is an opportunity. For everyone. But most likely, it can best be used strategically by those already in power. They have the experience and resources that the rest of us chumps don't. I believe we could fix that, through power of sheer numbers, but again - try getting any group of people to agree on anything, it's a shitshow, especially with more people.
I think it's highly likely that this virus could be used as a strategy to keep people in line even after the deaths decline. When the numbers of deaths and infections reach their peak, people will be at their most frightened. They'll be most vulnerable. And most importantly, the most polarized.
Notice how the shelter-in-place orders are barely enforced. Notice how long it's taken for state and federal governments to take this seriously. Notice how some people want everything shut down - soon and briefly - while others insist this is an attack on their freedoms.
The longer it takes to enforce a full, month-long quarantine, the more people get sick and die. The virus will linger and drag out longer and longer. Perhaps until we are resigned to our fates. Perhaps we become so accustomed to the little encroachments on our freedoms that we will not be upset, or notice, when they are completely gone.
And tensions between the two opposed groups will rise until it is "us vs them". The political instability in the US will reach a fever pitch, and not among the parties themselves, but us, the people. People will become violent. Those fearing for their freedoms will be seen as selfish and careless, those fearing for their safety seen as sheep and stupid. We will do their work for them. The 5G bullshit circulating is just that; it's bullshit. It's fearmongering. It's taking a small grain of truth (that this crisis will be used to exploit the working and middle classes) and then mixing it with wildly inaccurate assumptions, to make that tiny grain of truth look less feasible, and turn people against one another.
IF we allow this to happen, of course.
Stay informed. Think critically. Wash your hands, do not touch your face unless you have done so, and stay 6 feet away from people. Assume everyone is already infected; with the lack of needed testing, we probably already are, or will be soon.
And don't turn against each other. Yes, we are losing our freedoms currently, for what truly is a necessary evil. I truly believe that, because I have an educational background in chemistry and biology. But I also have noticed how things work here for some time. It would be foolish to think that this public health crisis won't be exploited, to the benefit of the wealthiest class. Don't give in to the hysteria and panic buy supplies in one trip, and don't go licking doorknobs and stair railings, either. Be kind to each other. Do not ever intend violence against each other. Stand firm and keep yourselves and your community safe, stand together, and keep an eye on what happens next.
TL;DR: This is all very real, the quarantine is necessary, but is being slowly and only partially enforced to turn people against one another, get them used to be afraid, get them used to gradually losing freedoms, and make them easier to control. Half-assing the shutdown will cause it to linger longer, meaning we will gradually lose more freedoms over more time. People will be so afraid of getting ill or making ends meet that they will not be able to organize effectively to prevent or stop this. You can already see this happening: the suggestion that habeas corpus be suspended during the outbreak, the parties trying to sneak in irrelevant new rules in stimulus bills, etc.
