TikTok is used by the Chinese Government to Monitor People Worldwide
Alright, hear me out. TikTok got it's start and became big after the US based Company Musical.ly merged with the Beijing based Company Bytedance. Musical.ly had nowhere near the numbers of TikTok and had been around for awhile but never gained its notoriety. Musical.ly was acquired by Bytedance in November of 2017, and by December, it had managed to get an increase of 250% to it's user base. This is all nearly a full year before it was rebranded to TikTok in August of 2018.
Now Bytedance claims that TikTok is not available in China, so these users did not come from Chinese citizens excited for the acquisition. It was a very random jump, but that is really not enough to prove anything alone. What is interesting is despite the fact it is not available in China and Bytedance claims all data is stored offshore, the Pricacy Policy of TikTok still states that they have the right to share any and all information from this app with the Chinese Government. If you look at the permissions for the app, most seem normal for a media sharing app. However, with the way that the secondary permissions build on top of each other, TikTok has permission to stay open and connect to the internet, your camera, your microphone, and even your flashlight from the moment you turn your phone on.
Finally, if you look at Bytedance's other properties, there is really only one that is notable: Toutiao. Toutiao is a Chinese News Organization created by Bytedance that has also now spread to other countries, such as the US and Japan, and which has teamed up with sponsored Chinese State Publishers multiple times. As "Chinese news," it must be sensored, edited, and approved by the Chinese government, and as such has been used to spread Chinese propaganda.
With all of this added up, it is a strong possibility that TikTok is a tool being used by the Chinese Government to gather a database of pertinent information on the citizens of the US and other global superpowers, especially when challenges the apps promote have been known to involve showing your family, showing your residence, and even dangerous and unhealthy challenges that could hurt or kill users.
