Is the "choice" of conspiracy meaningful?

There are countless conspiracy theories out there, so what drives people to "pick" one theory over another? I can find a lot of academic material on the possible motivations for conspiracy theories in general but I cannot seem to find much discussing if there is any deeper meaning to people's selection of theory, assuming that it is meaningful at all. Naturally, events such as 9/11 will act as a focusing point of sorts and things will go in and out of fashion (eg. UFOs) if the are woven into wider culture,.. but even within that there are a wide range of possible things to (dis)believe in, likely related to the psychology or some aspect of the person believing in them rather than it being simply what they might have been exposed to.
