Pennywise never died.
This is my first time posting here and I don't know if its appropriate, so go easy on me if you people post only non-fiction related stuff.
If you have watched the two IT movies; you will know that Pennywise the Dancing Clown was killed off for good in the second film. The Losers managed to put Pennywise back to sleep in the first movie but didn't really kill it (fact: Pennywise is a girl according to the IT book). This theory is based on the IT 2017 movies and not on the older miniseries which has a more obvious reason for Pennywise not being dead.
In the final scenes after the ritual of Chüd failed, the Losers put up a big fight with Pennywise and Pennywise grows to a gigantic spider; rendering it impossible to kill. The Losers then realise that Pennywise is only as big as you believe it to be. So, they call it all sorts of names and insult it until it shrinks down to a very vulnerable size (about the size of a 3-year-old). Then, the Losers proceed to gather around it, pull his its out, and crush it with their bare hands.
There is a big reason as to why this is wrong. This reason is the fact that they squeezed its heart and killed it. In the movie, Pennywise is known to be able to take many forms but its true form is the Dead Lights. How can you crush the heart of three floating, round lights and kill it? It is obvious that the Dead Lights don't have a heart because they lack other bodily systems. All that is portrayed of them are three round lights circling each other. They don't appear to have anything on them that classifies them as a relatively normal living being. One could argue that the Dead Lights were destroyed along with Pennywise's body when its heart was crushed because the Dead Lights were using Pennywise's form as a vessel. If it were so, the Dead Lights would have been destroyed ages ago because the form of Pennywise literally had some sort of spear going down its throat.
Here goes my theory: the Losers Club is indeed strong enough to annoy Pennywise and force him back into 27 years of sleep but not strong enough to kill it. Throughout the movie, Pennywise finds that it is damn near impossible to get rid of the Losers Club. This could have led Pennywise to believe that if the Losers were just kept from interfering with his feeding instead of having them killed, he could survive long enough to gobble down a few juicy children and not overexert himself trying to kill the Losers. So, the logical theory is that Pennywise fabricated the entire death scene at the end of IT: Chapter 2 to fool the Losers into believing that the threat was over and leaving Derry for good. It is obvious that this worked because even the last Loser to live in Derry; Mike Hanlon, moves away as well. After Derry is deserted by the Losers, Pennywise could eat a few kids after the pretend death scene, fill his belly without getting trouble from the Losers, and come back in his full glory 27 years later when the all-powerful Losers are shaking grandpas and grandmas.
I think this would make a nice IT: Chapter 3 where the news of Pennywise's trick finally reach the Losers after he reappears in his full glory after they supposedly killed him for good 27 years ago, and the now feeble Losers have to convince their own children into declaring all out war with a cosmic child eater. The real question is: how the hell do you even kill Pennywise?
