Conspiracy Fatigue from your loved ones- and how to overcome it
I recently had a discussion with a family member about why family members don’t take the conspiracy minded of their family seriously. And it gave me pause, and after much thought, this is my consensus.
Let’s go back to the beginning. In the early days of having internet access, many of us did not yet have a level of discernment quite worthy of being called objective. I mean photoshop was pretty good and after being used to 35mm film, a photo was pretty damn solid. So that took a bit to learn how to fact check.
We had got so used to our “trusted news sources” that when it started becoming apparent that they had an agenda, a narrative, any alternative news source became like a flame to a moth. And we all wanted to believe the alternative stories. And then we had to learn discernment about that.
For many of us, confirmation bias was just as prevalent in alternative news as it is for people who exalt mainstream media.
But for some of us, we really do know what objective means. And crushing our understanding of things has become a normal, positive part of truth seeking. We have to constantly churn our understanding of things and refine it as we get closer to the absolute truth we are clambering to find.
Now, for our families and loved ones who listen to our discussions, we must remember that they only hear these things as they’re said, and they retain those memories as almost headlines- Nibiru is going to come and hit the planet, alien disclosure is any day now, the WTC was an inside job ect... And all the while they heard these things from us over the years, they constantly willingly exposed themselves to the MSM counter narrative.
In the minds of our loved ones, we literally are the boy who cried wolf. And we look like idiots.
But they weren’t a fly on the wall as we all evolved our understanding of things. They forget that like them, we don’t have the exact same opinion (about the things we had tried to shed light upon) as we do today about them.
We are the boy who cried wolf and they still see us as the ones who hold those unrefined preliminary views from years gone by. They think we just go from one doomsday scenario to the next, like the flavour of the week. Conspiracy dejour!
So if you still struggle with your loved ones taking you seriously, maybe it’s time for that one discussion that takes a bit of humility. An overview perhaps of the ideas you’ve shared, and some brief updates on what your understanding is of those topics today. Leave out the details, just give a then and now assessment of where you’re at.
If you want to be taken seriously today, you’ve got to let them see that you have to constantly reassess your leads, fact check and evolve your best understanding. They need to understand that years of conspiracy theory really does lead some of us to an insanely concise level of scrutiny.
And please, don’t mention the lizard people. 🦎 They’ll just never be ready for that one 💀
