Roman gladiators were more like modern WWE wrestlers

Conventional theory states Roman gladiators were worthless slaves locking off limbs and splattering blood and guts into the crowds with excessive violence. Modern theory states gladiators were actually treated more like professionals fighters, with housing, food, and medical treatment. They were treated like celebrities and even got paid to do promotional pitches. They did not want to get injured fighting because trained professionals need to work to sell stadium tickets. link Well I propose that instead of competing like athletes they would probably make more money doing choreographed fights to pump up the crowd without getting badly hurt, like WWE wrestlers. Modern choreographed fights make way more money than most athletic fighters (professional wrestling is one of the highest watched shows on tv) so why would it have been different in Rome? I would bet the choreography was a closely guarded secret so the fans thought it was real, which is why modern historians don’t know about it.
