Peru Is Going Through A Political Crisis And People Are Going Missing
Recently, the congress of Peru have impeached President Martin Vizcarra under charges of corruption. It seems like a normal removal of power but the reality is that they had absolutely no evidence against him and they impeached him anyway. The investigation wasn’t even over and they went along with the impeachment process.
President Vizcarra took over from former president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski after he was impeached due to charges of corruption, and for almost 3 years has led Peru as its President. He has had problems with congress however, not always seeing eye to eye on things.
The president of the Peruvian congress, Manuel Merino, lead the vote to impeach President Vizcarra and now he is currently the President of Peru. The people were angry that Congress has violated the constitution of impeaching the president with no evidence. It lead to major protests for a couple of days, until Saturday night where things turned ugly.
The police started becoming more and more aggressive, launching both smoke bombs to the protestors and grabbing those they could. There have been reports that they were taken into vans that had no license plates. Many people have gone missing and what’s worrying is that not one police station have released any names of people they have taken. Sadly 2 guys, ages 24 and 25, died during this protest, but the people have been calling the police for murdering them. Videos have surfaced of police being overly aggressive to protestors and even shooting smoke bombs to the bodies of protestors on purpose.
What’s very interesting is that only one news channel have been covering the entire protest with no break. Other news channels have programmed comedy shows, game shows, and movies. And when they are being covered, they go out to make the protestors as the aggressors even though there’s countless videos of police brutality in the streets. Peru has a curfew time due to COVID-19, but when the reports surfaced that the 2 young men were declared dead, people went outside and started making noise, protesting inside their homes. Some didn’t listen and broke curfew rules, still in the streets protesting.
One interesting incident was outside of the congress building. Protestors managed to get very close to it, considering the police were ordered to guard it. Only a handful of police were there and they let the protestors through, escorting them. The protestors were peaceful, not trying to insight a fight and even hugged the police officers for helping them, thanking them. More police showed up as back up, but the protestors remained calm and peaceful. Then in the distance, it could be seen that a fire was started. The news reporter went to investigate, but as soon as they reached the fire, people were signaling him to turn around. Police set of smoke bombs were the peaceful protestors were and made them scatter. In the news video, you could see a young man literally running away from it, being stopped by a police officer and then being taken away by force with the help of 4 others. The young man screamed help towards the news reporter and as the reporter closed in, the police stopped him from going any further and covered the camera so nothing could be shown. This act of unity was all a lie to hide the fact that the police had set an ambush for the protestors.
In Article 128 of the constitution of Peru, it states that the president AND his cabinet will all be tried if the president is being investigated for crimes of any sort against the constitution. So far, 10 of his cabinet members,TONIGHT, have resigned from their positions. Those who remain are to have a meeting tomorrow morning at 8 to talk about President Merino and convincing him to step down as President. The people however, don’t forgive and forget and want these cabinet members to be tried and jailed, as all of them also voted in favor of removing President Vizcarra. The people have been watching Merino closely, since past presidents have either seeked asylum or committed suicide in order to avoid being investigated and charged for crimes. There have been reports that Merino is planning on seeking asylum, and the people have noticed that an unidentified plane going from Peru to Ecuador is schedule, but so far nothing new has come up about this.
The questions remain: Where are all those missing people? Is that plane going to take Merino to Ecuador so he can seek asylum? What happened in that incident outside the congressional building? Are the media really censoring the protests on purpose??
My country is in ruins right now because of corrupt politicians and their greedy hands. Instead of trying to help the country with COVID, they instead focus on impeaching a president they couldn’t control so they could keep power. I just wanted to post this on here because I need more people to now what’s going on in my country and not let these people get away with it. They’re criminals and the Peruvian people deserve answers. If anyone can tell me any information, things to look out for or things I can expect with situations like this, please let me know.
