Arecibo Observatory Sabotage

Netflix has a fun new series called "Alien Worlds"[1], which is modeled after nature documentaries, but with scenes from simulated environments of other planets that might harbor life. The series concludes with Astrobiologist Doug Vakoch[2] making an impassioned plea that we as a species need to use the Arecibo Observatory[3] to start beaconing out to select planets in an attempt to contact intelligent life.

Well, guess what happened less than 24 hours before Alien Worlds was released on Netflix? The Observatory collapsed and is now destroyed, likely permanently.

The show was released on December 2nd, and the observatory collapsed on December 1st. I know what you're thinking, the first cables started snapping in August, and in November it was decided to decommission the Observatory, but still, I find the timing here very suspicious. Doug had an extremely detailed and promising proposal for reaching out to alien life, and right before it gets some serious mainstream exposure, it all goes to shit.

Makes me think that someone out there really, really, doesn't want us to try making contact with other worlds.
