Stephen King is a vigilante(?)
June 1999: Bryan Smith, a man with a long conviction history of drunken, reckless driving, swerves his van off of the road into the pedestrian and author, Stephen King, who was out for a walk. King suffered broken bones in his right leg and hip, broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a head injury. Rumors suggest that King was not the first pedestrian to be struck by Smith. Bryan Smith serves no jail time and even keeps his license, which infuriates King.
Sept 21st 2000 (Stephen King's birthday): Bryan Smith is found dead in his trailer. His death was ruled an overdose of Fentanyl.
2010: Stephen King releases "Full Dark, No Stars" which is a collection of four novellas, one of which is "The Good Marriage". "The Good Marriage" is the story of a woman who discovers that her husband of 25 years is an infamous serial killer of local women. He promises to stop if she stays with him, and mentions the embarrassment and scandal that will engulf her family if she turns him in. Realizing that "going the legal route" isn't going to work...she kills him, making it look like an accident. An investigator, who had been hot on the trail of catching her husband, confronts her. The wife tells the investigator the truth, expecting to be arrested, but instead the investigator whispers in her ear that what she did was the right thing to do.
Writing "The Good Marriage" was King's catharsis, serving as both an admission of guilt and a justification for killing Bryan Smith a decade earlier.
