The Google Translate Conspiracy

So you guys know the conspiracy theory about google translate right? If not I suggest watching Nick Crowley's video on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=617Mtg0_dq4

Anyway, it's basically the theory that human traffickers are using google translate as means of communication. The gibberish phrase "owo uwu owo" in Igbo translates to "human trafficking" despite not actually being an actual translation in the language. Other slightly modified phrases of the gibberish changed the translation in what seemed like bargaining deals and other contextually disturbing messages (again I suggest watching the video).

This theory got an explanation by a Quora user: https://www.quora.com/Igbo-speakers-why-does-owo-uwu-owo-translate-into-human-trafficking-on-Google-translate

"The problem is Google Translate has a functionality called “suggest an edit”. If you translate something and spotted an error you can submit a “fixed” version and Google will try to learn from it. In an ideal world, users should use this functionality in good faith and only use it to improve the quality of a translator. In reality, bad users exist, but the damage of bad faith actions is usually limited because as long as there are enough “good” users, their influence would be diluted. However, for languages like Igbo, which is less used on the Internet, a few “bad” users can wreck more havoc. They can submit whatever sentence they want and since they are basically the only data points, they can actually affect the final translation result. And even if I want to correct it, I don’t understand Igbo so I cannot even help. It’s easier to come up with something nasty and teach Google, than to fix it, because the former does not require you to actually understand the language but the latter does.

Sorry, but you just discovered the dark side of human nature."

This seemed to debunked the whole theory right? Well... kind of.

You see, the whole debacle could just be some mischievous users trolling the internet for a laugh. However, personally, I'm not completely sure. Igbo isn't a well known language and is kind of obscure in the eyes of the internet. The fact that people can suggest edits to Translate doesn't change the fact that the theory COULD actually be legit. Human traffickers could have used this easy access way to communicate however, when more media attention was drawn to it, they abandoned it.

The code was suddenly thrust into the limelight, with thousands of people checking it for themselves. More people with much less sinister motives could have messed with the translations, suggesting their own edits and changes. Now, when you plug in many of the phrases featured in the video, they are different and some completely unrelated. But phrases not featured in the video still have sinister and creepy messages.

For example, "owo uwo woa owo woo wow aow owa owa loo lle owo wu uo owo" translates to "You see, there are times when you just can't seem to get your money's worth" which seems like an EXTREMELY specific and targeted message and another piece of evidence that this theory is indeed true.

TLDR:

The theory that Google Translate was used as a human trafficking code might really have been true but the system was destroyed by media attention.
