Why is being skinny always pushed?
Personal physical attraction aside, why is it that people are arguably forced to want to be skinny, thin, toned, etc.?
I stumbled upon a post online stating how body/fat positive hashtags and content are slowly being removed. They even provided some screenshots of notable social media sites showing that these once abundant hashtags and subjects were not found anymore. Some were even blocked and they weren't NSFW. I decided to try it out myself and noticed the same thing. This got me wondering why?
I think it may have something to do with money and control.
Think about it. The media, certain corporations, and different individuals all push this idea to be thin. They'll always say how unhealthy it is. Granted there is some truth there (I won't deny it) but we all know people who've lived their entire lives fat and healthy.
Media pushes the ideal body types as being those that are only attainable by a few people. Tall, size 0 women with thigh gaps are one of those types. Few women have the pelvis shape needed to create the thigh gap, let alone the bone structure to be a size 0 and 6' tall. Yet it is pushed. Sure you now have some plus sized models, but I think that's more of a pandering. Many body positive people have said how the LGBTQ community is far more widespread and normalized (the ones who said it first are all openly pro-LGBTQ) than being plump, chubby, or fat.
Now, back to the money. If you'll notice, fad diets, pills and programs don't always work. Some actually damage people's bodies and make it harder to keep the weight off. Next, all processed food is basically designed to make people fat, and keep them that way. So many additives that are FDA approved cause people to gain weight, make it harder to lose it, and make people addicted to those foods.
Who benefits? Anyone who gets money from sick people, or people who want a quick fix. Big pharma, mega corporations, fat removal companies, media, and more. For all we know, many of them are owned by the same companies or people who just want to make more money off of us.
As for control, think about it. When body/fat positive organizations are getting people to feel good in the skin they're in, no corporations are making money off of them, and doctors aren't getting kickbacks from prescribing expensive and dangerous drugs or referring them to other doctors for expensive surgeries.
I think even politicians get in on the action by making laws and taxes that affect fat people. Corporations can easily back these politicians. They can then promise more campaign funds or whatever for these laws and taxes to be imposed.
So, promote specific (and in certain cases rare) body types. Make unhealthy and fattening foods addictive, cheap, and over abundant. Make expensive surgeries and drugs a quick fix option to appeal to instant gratification (which means that people won't work on disciplining themselves and will be right back where they started).
Honestly, just my thoughts.
What do you guys think?
