Why isn't there a larger push towards nuclear power?
I know nuclear power has some public image problems and there are ongoing concerns about waste storage but this really seems the only viable solution until we come up with economical larger scale renewable sources.
Even ignoring climate change nuclear is objectively safer than fossil fuels in terms of causing preventable deaths and arguably safer than some forms of renewable.
I genuinely can't understand why there is not a huge push to switch from fossil fuels to nuclear worldwide as a stopgap measure until we can develop a new energy source. It just seems a no brainer.
Any ideas? The only things I can think of are cost, pressure from the fossil fuel lobby and lingering fear over reactor accidents.
