Do you reckon the Americans did actually know about the Japanese Attack before pearl harbour, hence the convenient fact the carriers were out at see away from danger...?
Ive heard folklore that Churchill knew of the Japanese being up to some pretty mischievous shit and it wouldn't be at all a big surprise if the information was shared, but only to a very select few, such as only being shared with Roosevelt who may or may not have then employed more veiled means of getting the navy to ensure the carriers were away, because losing the carriers would of been a major blow.
The Navies of the day had become increasingly aware of the strengths of a carrier force and yet mass production hadn't been mainstreamed; whereas battleships, cruisers and destroyers were already in mass production, this was due to a massive drive to modernise the US fleet with the threat of hostilities growing in multiple theatres and waters of the world, so this is why i theorise the carriers were conveniently away on a training exercise, alone, leaving the more disposable & somewhat dated pacific fleet as a lure for the attack to provoke the American public into action and invoke a strong patriotism to "do your part" in face of the attack
