Why Are Conspiracy Theories Popular?
Why is it so easy to believe that bad people are responsible for the world's problems - and so difficult to believe that conflict has an ideological basis? Rene Girard argues that the desire to find a scapegoat is built-in to human society. Scapegoats bear the weight of the tensions inherent in any social order and unify communities against a concrete enemy. I believe that rising levels of conflict in American society are responsible for the proliferation of conspiracies - the hunt for a scapegoat is on in full force.
