Great-Grandfather's WWII UFO Sighting

We are having family over for the easter holiday today. While in the middle of a conversation about astronomy/astrophysics, my grandfather brings up the subject of UFOs and had a very interesting story to share about my great-grandfather during WWII.

My great-grandfather was a commander with the US coast guard. Concerned with the threat of a kamikaze attack on their ship, he set in place a system where by he had three separate men positioned at different points along the ship, each using a scope-like tube to monitor skies for movement. While I have limited knowledge of military tactics (and an even more limited ability to explain them), my understanding is that this system was put in place in order to more accurate gauge how fast and in what direction a flying target was moving. Each of the three men would individually and separately report when something was spotted, and my grandfather would use that information to help shoot down potential airborne threats.

Apparently, on at least one occasion the men started to report something strange. During the day, two of the men seperately reported to my great grandfather that they witnessed what appeared to be multiple objects come out of the ocean, move around, and eventually fly out of sight at incredible speeds. While my grandfather's memory is a bit fuzzy, he also believes the men reported that the objects were following the ship at one point.

Anyways, I just figured this would be an interesting story to share with you all! My great-grandfather was apparently uninterested in the possibility of the objects being UFOs, but the people who served under him were always amazed and puzzled by what happened. If only he was still alive, I would have loved to question him about it!

Edit: I should add that this sighting took place in the pacific, likely near midway.

I was just told that after my great-grandfather was informed of multiple of these sightings, he actually officially reported them. Chances are there is a record of those sightings out there somewhere! My grandfather attempted to find out years ago, but his FOIA request was unsuccessful as they told him he would need to pay for them to search the records. Maybe I should try to find out myself 🤔
