Survival vs Thriving
I was at my physical therapist the other day, and I was in a sort of depressive mood, and I asked him, so what is the point of life, is it just to try to see how long I can survive, in the midst of all the suffering?
He was saying, no, the point isn't just to survive, but to thrive.
This kind of caught me off guard, but it makes a lot of sense. Survival is the most primal instinct, with one goal, to stay alive as long as possible, to meet whatever requirements to make this happen. The most basic needs for survival are obviously food, shelter, water.
So if every day is a struggle to meet these basic needs and keep going, it seems to induce a state of survival.
But, on the other hand, if all the basic needs to survival are met, and there is a confidence that they will continue to be met, then it allows more of a sense of thriving, blossoming, flourishing, producing good fruits.
I believe this is what leads to great works of art, inventions, being able to experience the higher self.
Then I contrast that with society, and how it seems in a lot of ways to keep us in a state of constant survival, fear, fight or flight kinda mode.
But what happens when we as a society evolve to be able to have all our basic needs of survival met, and a confidence that they will continue to be met?
Where we don't have to put in 40 -60 hours a week to just get by. What if we made enough to flourish with 10-20 hours a week, and had extra time to build family, think, philosophize, invent, create.
In my mind it would have a completely transformative effect on society. And the world as a whole. If we were thriving vs surviving.
Also, to consider, why does our current society want to keep us in a state of survival? Is it for control purposes? Are they afraid of what could possibly blossom out of humanity if we all had the same opportunity to survive and flourish?
Are you surviving or thriving in your personal life? What could you do to ensure confidence in survival for you and those around you, to allow us all to flourish and blossom to our fullest potential?
