"The question which divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct. My own feeling is that it is not crazy enough." -Bohr
It will be incredible and shocking if the alien hypothesis is confirmed. Debunkers and skeptics, who I often identify with, have the job of keeping everyone honest and realistic . That's great. But their beloved Occam's Razor style "That's extravagant / It's not realistic/ It’s crazy” critique is weak in some ways.
As Niels Bohr said of quantum theory, "We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question which divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct. My own feeling is that it is not crazy enough.”
Richard Feynman: "Quantum mechanics describes nature as absurd from the point of view of common sense. And yet it fully agrees with experiment. So I hope you can accept nature as She is - absurd."
So this is not so say that we should accept every absurd hypothesis. But it IS to say that we should not REJECT every absurd hypothesis.
Chris Hatfield thinks those persuaded by the alien hypothesis are idiots. But he's arguing against a straw-man : "To see something in the sky that you don’t understand and then to immediately conclude that it’s intelligent life from another solar system is the height of foolishness and lack of logic." Yes, to do that immediately would be foolish. Luckily there are plenty of educated, sensible, non-idiots having a non knee-jerk discussion about this.
Harvard astronomer Avi Leob is among the conversation participants. Is he an idiot? Maybe he's wrong (or right), but he's not an idiot. On this subject: "We have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in searching for weakly interacting massive particles, a leading dark matter candidate. And so far those searches have failed. That doesn’t mean they were a waste: going down dark alleys is part of the scientific process."
Neil deGrasse Tyson says it's "hubris" to think aliens would visit us. “We’re not that interesting.” Ok, Neil. Go ahead and tell us what you know about the interests of each alien civilization that might conceivably visit us. What hubris to think you have ANY idea what an alien race would find interesting or want to investigate.
Such offhandedly smug, obtuse things for otherwise smart, informed people to say. In the words of Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption, it almost seems deliberate.
