"They" Drove Him CRAZY because He Knew Too Much: a history of Govt UFOs Disinfo from Shaver to Bennewitz (Part 1)

We're reaching a "Now It Can Be Told" moment. What follows is true. Sources to verify this are all public if you want to look for them.

Target #1: Richard Sharpe Shaver and the "Shaver Mystery"

In 1945, Richard Sharpe Shaver claims to be in communication with ultraterrestrials in disc-shaped flying machines who are concerned about atomic pollution. He mails a document entitled "A Warning to Future Man" to "Amazing Stories" editor Raymond Palmer. Palmer, a long-time fan of Lemuria lore, adapts the document into the fictional narrative "I Remember Lemuria". The collaborative work was published in January 1941. Shaver reports that he regrets it has to be published as fiction.

To the wartime censors, the story would have raised no eyebrows. It was a simple Flash Gordon story being published in a pulp. This wasn't the New York Times. It slipped passed the censors. But after the magazine hits the shelves, the shit hits the fan.

Despite appearing in a "kids stuff pulp", the first "Shaver Mystery" story has a section that sends shivers down the spines of the people tasked with securing the biggest secret of them all: The Manhattan Project. Because Shaver's otherwordly guides tell him:

The particles of radium and other radioactive metals are poison. These poisons accumulate in the soil of the planet, and are continually being washed out of it by the rains with the result that all the water is becoming increasingly contaminated. When these waters are drunk, the poisons accumulate in the body.

The [Ultraterrestrials] have devised means to protect us from the accumulation of the poisons, but it has become evident that their efforts are not entirely foolproof. Methods include:

* Multiple distillation of the water in which we drink and bathe;
\* Treatment of the water in a centrifuge to remove the very finely divided age poisons that cannot be removed by distillation;
* Generators to create a magnetic field of energies;
* Air centrifuges to remove poisons from the air.

In middle of WW2, Shaver has managed to publish what is essentially a blueprint for the ongoing atomic enrichment programs: heavy water distillation, isotopic separation via centrifuge, electromagnetic separation, and gaseous diffusion. These are top national secrets appearing on news stands and mailboxes across the country. The bosses are fucking pissed:

How the fuck could you have allowed this?
Who the hell is this Shaver fellow?
How does he know the details of the Manhattan Project?
And who's behind all this: ( I'm not saying it's Russians, but.... it's Russians, right?)
And how do we keep it from happening again?

So off goes a team to try to figure out what Shaver's story is. Everyone's expecting that he's a Commie, or maybe a Nazi -- so it's a shock when the word comes back: Shaver appears clean -- he's just a failed factory worker with mental illness who's had bouts of homelessness and stints in a looney bin. He has no clearances, he has no ties to anyone with any clearances -- he's just a nutty sci-fi fanatic, so far as we can tell. We'll keep an eye on him, of course...

But spy or no spy, we can't let Shaver keep spreading these secrets.
And we can't have anyone ELSE spreading these secrets either -- this cannot happen again.
And -- we can't even tell anyone what they're not allowed to say. We can't go to Palmer and say "no more atomic stuff"; We can't go to Shaver and say "Ixnay on the atomspeak". That would compromise security even more!

So how can we keep Shaver and Palmer busy, distracted, and in the dark? Disinformation...
So we heard you like like stories about Spacemen, Ultraterrestrials, and their Flying Machines? We'll choke you on such stories to the point that's all you can think about.

Shaver and Palmer begin receiving tons and tons of stories set in their universe. Soon, every page in their magazine is saturated with third-party Shaver Mystery lore. Shaver spends the rest of his days as a paranoid schizophrenic living in a world of his own imagination -- a worldview that is validated by professional agents of deception.

By June 1947, "Amazing Stories" is dedicated exclusively to the Shaver Mystery and its tale of spacemen and ultraterrestrials with disc-shaped flying machines. Shaver's initial paragraph about atomic technology has all been forgotten. The Shaver threat has been neutralized. Mission Accomplished...

Or so we thought.

For the past two years, we've been feeding the public sci-fi stories of flying discs to keep them busy.
But during the last week of June.... people start actually seeing them.
What the actual fuck....
