Thought Experiment

If we were told today that an asteroid was going to hit earth that was a similar size to the last ice age, what would human kind do? If we couldn’t destroy it I feel like the next contingency plan would be to try and get some humans off the planet. (This would be relatively unsuccessful. At best we might be able to get a couple hundred people into space.) Then we would attempt to get a number of chosen people underground in bunkers and cities that have been built to withstand this type of thing. Theoretically we should be able to save at least a few hundred million people but due to the instincts of our species it would look more like trying to get on a life boat on the titanic. Some facilities getting overrun and destroyed. Some facilities closing early with only a fraction of capacity filled. Regardless, a few million people would make it underground.

The last time a major asteroid hit (466 million years ago) it caused an ice age that left earth impossible to be inhabited by humans for approximately 2 million years. This is roughly 33,000 generations. With no ground support, there is an extremely high likely hood that all those in space would perish before being able to return safely to earth. Those underground would also be having a difficult time but they should be able to survive.

Why don’t we live underground now? Simply because we haven’t been. Imagine growing up underground and knowing that tens of thousands of generations before you grew up underground. Over 33,000 generations there would be tremendous evolutionary change. Our skin would turn pale white, our eyes would be larger, and we would probably be shorter having to deal with a stronger gravitational pull. By this point the surface would probably be deadly to us even if it was returning to normal(Would love to know if this is true if there are any smart people out there)

For 2 million years we would become underground explorers. With the surface frozen, most of the heat would be locked underwater and underground, coming from our core. We would become absolute masters of the underground earth and oceans. (Also would love to hear some debate on whether this is true as well).

Imagine our technology in 2 million years. We would be cruising at hundreds of miles underwater and have ships that can pop right out onto the surface and even into outer space.

Upon resurfacing we discover that life is back. We can’t quite survive it but there are millions of other species who can. We decide that we are going to be guardians of the planet. We will observe these new beings with little to no intelligence and make sure they do not harm our planet…

Could this all have happened before?
