Warning from history: congressional hearings and the Condon Report.
Many will know this but, as a reminder to some and, new information for others, in 1966, then House-Minority Leader Gerald Ford pushed for congressional hearings on UFOs. He didn't get them but, a compromise was reached that resulted in the University of Colorado UFO Project (aka The Condon Committee), which was billed as a scientific study (the project leader however made his biases publicly clear from the outset). Hundreds of UAP/UFO cases were examined from Project Blue Book.
The project report (The Condon Report/ Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects) contains many true 'unknowns', that is, cases with good data which defied conventional explanations despite efforts by scientists to explain. However the conclusion of the report - written by a biased Edward Condon - stated that science had nothing to gain from the further study of UFOs. In 1968, that was essentially a nail in the coffin of the possibility of opening up the topic for mainstream science. Ridicule followed anyone thereafter.
I hope those with genuine interest in the corridors of power are aware of this chapter in history.
As an aside, some of the scientists who worked on the project authored a book titled, 'UFOs?Yes! Where the Condon Committee Went Wrong'. In that, you'll find the sensational claim that Condon issued an internal memo which stated (and I'm paraphrasing), "The trick would be to have the public believe that a real, rigorous study had taken place".
I hope history doesn't repeat itself...
