If we are to believe that:

The US government in the 1930s/40s, having concluded a series of absolutely horrific wars, was intensely focused on maintaining a military advantage wherever possible.
Claims of crash retrievals and sightings dating back over 70 years are accurate.
These crafts are from a non-human intelligence.
The US government has for decades advanced a global attitude of ridicule around the mere mention of UFOs/UAPs.
The US has actively intervened in foreign cases of UAPs, and helped foreign governments to hush up their own experiences.
We are NOW, IN A MAJOR SHIFT IN TACTICS being lead through a coordinated disclosure process with the implicit participation of the US government...

Doesn't it stand to reason that:

The US government has spent the last 70 years attempting to reverse engineer these crafts to advance their military capabilities.
The government encouraged ridicule in order to:
- Hamper adversaries attempts to recruit qualified scientists to study the crafts, due to forced stigma.
- Prevent press and civilians into the governments own efforts, keeping their research away from prying eyes and giving them a tactical advantage.
Leaks and claims over the years would have been enough for our foreign adversaries to know what we had in our possession and pursue efforts on their own (as we did with the remote viewing programs that were inspired by Soviet efforts?)

The US has successfully reverse engineered the crafts in its possession, securing the desired military advantage. The disclosure can be seen as an announcement to the world that we have done the impossible, that we have the next atom-bomb (or equivalent technological advantage).
A foreign adversary has beaten us, and we must destigmatize the topic to motivate our scientists to help us catch up.
There is a pending event that requires pulling back the curtain.
- Such an event would only be preceded by disclosure if its occurrence was going to undermine US strategy. By bringing people into "the know," they maintain a role of authority in the face of what could be seen by the population as a more authoritative power (undermining US dominance)
Or, by maintaining a leadership role in disclosure and posture, we become (or continue to be) the channel through which a non-human intelligence decides to engage with the world writ-large, again securing the US more power in advance of more overt interactions with these beings.
