Let’s clear up some bullshit. It’s important.
I see this statement here all the time: “There is no evidence ESP is real.”
No. Wrong. Totally and completely false. There is a TON of evidence for it that has been peer-reviewed and replicated.
Allow me to start by quoting Dr. Jessica Utts. Utts is the former president of the American Statistical Association. She literally wrote the textbook on statistics that colleges use. She just won a lifetime achievement award in Statistics. She is one of the most respected statisticians in the United States. She said:
Using the standards applied to any other area of science, it is concluded that psychic functioning has been well established. The statistical results of the studies examined are far beyond what is expected by chance. Arguments that these results could be due to methodological flaws in the experiments are soundly refuted. Effects of similar magnitude to those found in government-sponsored research at SRI and SAIC have been replicated at a number of laboratories across the world. Such consistency cannot be readily explained by claims of flaws or fraud.
Emphasis mine, because I’m tired of hearing this bullshit repeated over and over again. Let me emphasize this with another quote:
It is recommended that future experiments focus on understanding how this phenomenon works, and on how to make it as useful as possible. There is little benefit to continuing experiments designed to offer proof, since there is little more to be offered to anyone who does not accept the current collection of data.
She’s saying if you don’t believe psi is real then you can’t be persuaded by evidence. End of story. But please, read her entire report. It was presented to Congress, by the way: https://www.ics.uci.edu/~jutts/air.pdf
As a bonus, how about a short interview with Nobel-prize winning physicist Brian Josephson: https://www.tcm.phy.cam.ac.uk/~bdj10/mm/articles/PWprofile.html
Here’s a fascinating article—by a skeptic no less—in which he demonstrates the complete lack of impartiality when it comes to psi research: https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/04/28/the-control-group-is-out-of-control/
“How come there aren’t major peer reviewed studies?” There are, they just can’t get published in the major journals: https://windbridge.org/papers/unbearable.pdf
“But Wikipedia says…” Wikipedia is not only horrendously biased (any UFO buff knows this), it’s completely corrupt: https://prn.fm/wikipedias-assault-scientific-progress-case-dr-rupert-sheldrake-wikipedias-assault-scientific-progress-case-dr-rupert-sheldrake-gary-null-progressive-radio/
“But James Randi had a million dollar challenge…” which was totally unwinnable. Many people applied, and Randi continued to change the rules until it was impossible to win. In some cases he simply pulled out at the last minute for no reason given. That’s because James Randi was a disgusting human being who was frequently caught out in lies: https://michaelprescott.typepad.com/michael_prescotts_blog/2006/12/the_challenge.html (the evidence is extensive, be sure to read all four parts)
Here’s a write up by someone who tried to apply, discussing just how unfair the entire thing is set up from the beginning: https://christopherfleming.com/million-dollar-challenge-proves-nothing-to-science-only-that-a-challenge-was-met/
Some “woo” is real. Yes, a lot of it is bullshit, but a lot of it isn’t. We don’t understand it very well, but we can replicate it (even you can do it yourself). It’s just a weak effect within the average population. That’s right, the average population possesses psi ability.
Stop. Saying. This.
