Some context on the UAP IG investigation.
I was looking into the scope of what the IG investigation into UAP could actually reveal after hearing Danny and Lue on the recent Fade to Black show. I was initially concerned it might not produce anything but there may actually be potential for a lot of information to come out. Other IG reports are extremely thorough and unethical/illegal behavior (such as a decades-long cover up) is not really something that can be classified. In fact, it is literally the IG’s job to report everything nefarious they find to the public (that doesn’t expose sources and methods, of course).
The investigation also made it into the monthly DOD IG newsletter: https://media.defense.gov/2021/Jun/08/2002737040/-1/-1/1/OIG%20NEWSLETTER%20JUNE%202021%20V4.PDF
The scope of the investigation is rather vague: “The objective of this evaluation is to determine the extent to which the DoD has taken actions regarding Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP).”

The memorandum mentions DoD Directive 5106.01 which issues “the mission, organization and management, responsibilities and functions, relationships, and authorities of the IG DoD.” I skimmed through the Directive to get a sense of what information the IG could potentially access and this caught my eye:
- AUTHORITIES. Pursuant to, or in addition to, the authorities provided in Reference (c), the IG DoD is delegated authority to:
“b. Access all records (electronic or otherwise), reports, investigations, audits, reviews, documents, papers, recommendations, or other information or material available to any DoD Component.
(1) Except as specifically denied in writing by the Secretary of Defense, pursuant to the authority contained in section 8 of Reference (c) and subparagraph 6.a.(1), no officer, employee, or Service member of any DoD Component may deny the IG DoD, or officials assigned by the IG DoD, access to information, or prevent them from conducting an audit, investigation, evaluation, or inspection.
(2) OIG DoD officials shall possess the appropriate security clearance and access authorization when classified information is requested.”
The current assistant IG, Randolph Stone who signed the memorandum, has previously initiated at least 4 investigations into Lockheed Martin. If anything was squirreled away into the private sector in order to avoid FOIA requests and oversight it seems like he’d probably find it. Even if that information is classified, members of congress with the appropriate clearance would see it.
